Command X - Part 3

This was the final for the Command X competition, they had to design a campaign where they can get young people to vote. So all three of them had good ways of getting them to vote. So for the first girl I found that her images were good but her concept was weak. She needed a bit more work on it because even i knew i wouldn't vote with the way those look. Afterward when the guy went up I didn't like it, because he was trying to explain what he wanted and it didn't make sence. He had good concept but he still needed to work hard on the design. For the last girl i believe she did really well on the concept. Even though her design was just words it was straight to the point and it would make me want to vote.

Something different I did during last week #11

Well this week I went to a concert downtown. I didn't have to pay for it my friend did since it was only $10. It was different because it was just inside a small bar, it looked like it wouldn't be good at first but it ended up being very fun. There was lots of bands playing that day and one of the members came to me and my friend and started to talk with us. The night was great and we stayed till the end listening to all the songs. Later we left to go to 7 eleven then we went home on the bus and i didn't get home till 1am which was bad because there was school the next day.

Command X - Part 1

The design I like the most for the ‘Jimmy Dean Pancakes and Sausage on a Stick packagingwas the girl who had a character riding one of the pancakes and sausage on a stick. I found that very funny to see. She had the right idea on how to make the package more interesting. I wasn’t surprise at all to see the ones who went home go home because they didn’t bring out the design of the package that well as the others who stayed.

Command X - Part 1

I thought all of there designs were pretty well put together but what I really liked was the design were the horse looked mad/scary. I thought that one was the best then any of the others. The ones I think would have gone home was the two that stuttered a lot throughout their presentation. Its not that they couldn’t bring out their design its just that they didn’t know what words to say and that they were either to quite or couldn’t bring out the right words. When the results came I was right on who had to leave the competition.

Something different I did during last week #10

This week I went to my cousins wedding, it was my second time at a wedding but my first time at a English wedding. The other wedding I went to was Greek and they are so different. After the ceremony we went to the after party and that was great. I must have had more appetizers then the main coarse the food was that great. There was dancing, which me and my sisters join in on and then there was desert afterwards. After that we had to leave earlier then most people and got stop by drunk people which was funny.

Something different I did during last week #9

This week I went to a picnic with my friend and her family. It was my first time at this park and I got to say it was beautiful there. There was a river, a park and lots of animals. We went looking for fishes to catch which I had fun doing. The BBQ tasted so good so I really like it. I also chased down my friends brother with a water gun and water bottle so it really was a fun day.

Something different I did during last week #8

This week I went to another concert only it was for Canada day. It was also my first time spending the whole day in Mississauga. We left my friends apartment at 11:30 and took the TTC to the Go station. We didn’t get to Mississauga until around 2pm. Then after getting to Square One we got food and went straight to the stage because that’s where bands will be playing. The singers that I like were: These Kids wear crowns, Fefe Dobson and Shawn Desmen. They were all great performers.

Time Spent On The Following Things Infograph

Something different I did during last week #7

Something I did new this week was going to a concert at Wonderland. I was never at a concert at wonderland before. Not only was it a concert it was a Christian concert, it had real bands but they seem to be into the whole Christian thing. It was really weird but fun at the same time. A scary thing that I did that week was at Wonderland I went on the new ride ‘Wind Seeker’. I was so scared! My friend had to pay for my launch for me to go up on it. Another thing was that I was afraid of heights so that was really scary.

What Design Means to Me

I chose to be a designer because:
It's what I'm good at and what I like to do

Design is about:
Making people happy with your images and design. To make them see things they haven't before.

Design is important because:
Without it everything will be boring and ugly without it.

Design is created by:
Graphic designers, Illustrators, copywriters, painters, drawers anyone who can create something.

When I design I feel:
Sometimes happy, sometimes annoyed, sometimes excited to design something new.

When I experience a good design I:
Post it online or show it to people to see if they like it as much as I like it.

Design is:
Everywhere no matter where you look there is design all around you. Design is in the house you live in, design is in nature, Its even on what you wear.

Something different I did during last week #6

So this week the thing that I did that was different was that actually wear really high heals. I don't mean like heels that are one inch or two. These heels were about 4 inch's. It was so scary to walk in them but it was was alright i needed practice in them for a wedding that I'm going to in July. I think I did well in walking in them even though my feet were hurting so much afterward.

Something different I did during last week #5

This week I was working on something new with clay. I made a tiger for the first time ever and even had refreneces because I never made one before so i needed to get the body structure right. It took me two hours to make and I believe it turned out really good. Its laying down on its side and the body struture came out really well. It's not the last one i'm going to make either, I need to make one more and when I'm done them both and painted them I will post the picture here.

Something different I did during last week #4

Something new that I did was that I went to a concert up north. Roughly it was a hour bus ride up there by Go. That is the first time I ever took a Go bus for that long of a trip. So when me and my friend made it to Milton we walked around for 2 hours trying to find the concert. In the end we gave up and finally called a taxi. It was a new experience in a new place and I found it interesting how different it is from Toronto.

My Favorite Designer

Chad W. Beckerman

  • He grew up in Connecticut town in Litchfield hills.
  • He graduated from Rhode Island School of design in 2000
  • Traveling to New York City he was hired at Scholastic books as a assistant designer.
  • After he moved to Brooklyn, New York where he later was hired at Greenwillow books where he was promoted to designer and later Senior designer.
  • Soon he left and became the new art director for Abrams books for young readers and Amulet books and has been there to this day.

Covers made by Beckerman

He designs book covers for Adults, Young Adults and even Kids books.

For the book “Fell by David Clement-Davies” he designed it all on his own, he design and illustrated the book Jacket. He also illustrated the interior of the book adding the designs along the sides to match the cover as much as possible. The target market is for teenagers 14 and up; because of how dark the jacket is it’s more suited for teenagers and up then for children. So far there is only one language printed for “Fell” and that is English. You can find this book at any bookstore as well as you can buy it online.

Interview

1) What is a typical day like?

10:09pm on a Sunday ha no
, working with editorial staff, illustrators, designers, and sometimes authors on various stages of books and picture books.

2) What is your role as the Art director for Abrams Books for young Readers and Amulet Books?

I find illustrators for both imprints, I create the visual books of the two imprints as a whole. Creating the aesthetic of the two. I work with three other designers and direct their designs.

3) How many concepts were presented to the client? How Long was the process? Who was it targeted towards?

Unique because it was kind of of , for the first idea was the eyes, I illustrated the eyes first. There were two concept to the story that the drawing had to show. From there I made the illustration, I sent them to the author, he said one of the eyes was a different color, so I changed that.

I don’t think about when I do the cover globally, because other country they can design the cover how they want. It depends on the rights to sell the books those countries.

Yes mainly for novels there is two groups 8- 12 and YA-13- above then there is the

in between market 10-12. YA you can use photo’s there is no rules but it’s not a bad idea cause photo’s tend to look older while illustrations for are more for young audience, while some illusions could be use for older, you have to design accordingly.

Dairy of a wimpy kid was a long process. That one was a little harder because the illustration was a sick figure and there was curtain rules I had to follow. It was a journal but not a journal because it was a diary. You have to think of it logically. Originally it was a piece of paper but then we put it so it was like someone else came and diary so that was his logic on why it was created like a stick figure.

4) What’s a great day at work?

Any day that I feel like a idea that I come up with that clicks and start working that’s a pretty good day. Cause I have a idea and click is one thing , that works is if the editor likes it or designer. Working with a illustrator working together, making it click or work. Moving around and making a book work is pretty cool. Basically any day that your idea actually work.

5) Do you like what you are doing now working for Abrams Books for young Readers and Amulet Books?

Yeah, it’s a job that I think why are they paying me to do this. I was working on a cover where I had to make type with cheese. I went to a chief to see how the cheese was made. I’m getting paid to mess around and play with my food. so Yeah I like what I do.

6) Where do you see book design's going in the future?

I think recently I did a blog post on jacket cases where you take the jacket off and there is the case underneath. Some books designers forget about the case or repeat the cover of the jacket onto the case, I feel its a shame cause they don’t think or believe it’s a whole package. I think of it all as a whole thing being a beautiful object.

I don’t find ebooks as a threat, it’s something to be talked about and to be taken seriously. It only pushes book design further. Future book designs with ebooks will be taking it to making it more interactive, with more animation, pop up video’s, having it be more interactive. It’s there but not out in the world at the moment. What it is then people will ajust to it. ebooks can’t handle a lot of things. Just like having a image in a novel can’t handle that. It’s pretty much taken the design out of the ebook. That’s it.

7) Is there anything you would like to say to future book designers?

Looking at not only the design of things but WHY it’s really hard question cause u got to look at the job. Like the a kids books between a adult, going out and look at the market. Big picture stuff, that’s how I fell into it. When I was in school, After school I go to a book store and look at the designs of books, the idea of creating one image that tells a story though that one image. Just stay with it, I tell this to illustrators even if your in school you have to just do it. Do design whether it’s for a client or not, if you don’t you just lose it. I was up 11:00 working on a book it’s not because it’s work but because I want to do it. Just little thing like that will shine though.

Analyze the Apple Ads

Analyze the apple ads in a semiotic framework. Especially sad song(long)

www.apple.com/getamac/ads

Basically the apple ads are almost all the same, there is one guy with glasses and a brown suit and another young guy wearing blue. Each commercial talks about something new and bad that the PC talks about. During the sad song PC starts to sing about how everyone will leave it because of all the problems it has and go to Mac instead. The way the two are different from one another is that PC is dress in dull brown colors and Mac is dressed in bright blue colors. PC is older and has glasses while Mac is younger. PC complains about the problems it's been having in all the commercial's while Mac listens and sometimes says that he doesn't have those problems.

Something different I did during last week #3

So over the weekend I went to a horse back riding camp. What I did there was stay there for three days camping in a tent. The thing I did differently was that I wasn't prepared for that camp. I always go camping and I'm always ready bringing everything with me. This time though I left my rubber boots at home and had no extra sweater. So it rained all day Saturday and I was soaking wet and cold. This really isn't me cause I'm always prepared for camp so it was really different that weekend.

Do the media moguls of the world truly control the minds and souls of us common people?

Yes I do believe they control the minds and souls of common people of the world. What they do is control what we look at everyday and those advertisements make us want the product or service they are selling. They try to make commercial's and ads as appealing as possible to get people to spend there money. Most people probably wouldn't believe this but this is what Media moguls are doing in our world.

Something different I did during last week #2

During the weekend I went to an anime convention, something that is not usually me since I love anime conventions a lot I actually worked for my dad on Friday and Sunday so that I could have Saturday free. As well as this year I didn't dress up as a pokemon I decided to just go as a punk dog. No picture taken but that was fine. I still looked cool I believe.

Introduction

My name is Sarah Kalaitzidis, I'm a student at Humber college for the Graphic Design program. I live in Scarborough, which takes an hour and a half to tavel to and from school. My hobbies is to collect Manga books, so far I have over 700 manga books (manga books are Japanese comic books). I also like to collect some Anime dvd's. My greatest hobby would have to be that I love to draw. I draw anything from wolves to manga characters, I also try to draw Gryphon and Dragons when I can. Another hobby of mine is a computer game I play called "Shin Megami Tensei" I sign onto the game everyday even if I don't do anything on it.
